A multi-car accident on Grandview Road between I-5 and Portal Way in Ferndale, WA happened just after 9 a.m. this morning. Law enforcement and aid crews were called to the scene where they treated and released three people and took one of the drivers by ambulance to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The chain reaction crash involved 3-vehicles and apparently began when one vehicle rear-ended the car in front of them, pushing it into the vehicle ahead of them. The accident involved a full-size pickup, an SUV and a passenger car in the westbound lane.
Crash damage to one of the vehicles caused an oil sheen on the road; Washington State Department of Transportation crews were called in to distribute sand to decrease slickness.
Traffic was temporarily delayed while aid and law enforcement worked at the scene. Washington State Patrol is still investigating the crash.
What is a multi-car accident?
Multi-vehicle crashes are accidents involving multiple vehicles. Most often, a multi-car accident begins with one vehicle rear-ending the vehicle in front of them which causes that vehicle to jerk forward and crash into the vehicle in front of them. The higher the speed of the impact and the heavier the traffic, the more vehicles are impacted. In some cases, additional cars crash into the crashed vehicles because they don’t have time to stop.
In worst case scenarios, a pile-up occurs with many vehicles. Pile-ups are most likely to happen on heavily trafficked freeways with a high speed limit. This type of traffic accident can be deadly at worst and cause injuries and damage at the very least. It is common for vehicles stuck in a pile-up to get hit several times, increasing the odds of whip lash and other personal injuries. When cars spin upon impact – which is common in multi-car pileups – passengers are in high danger for side-impact injuries. One of the biggest risks associated with multi-vehicle pile-ups is when a fire begins in one vehicle and spreads over the entire crash zone. When people exit their vehicles during a pile-up they put themselves in danger of being hit by another car.
Causes of rear-end crashes
The most common factors that play into rear-end collisions are:
• Distracted driving
• Impaired driving
• Distractions on the road
• Reckless driving
• Drowsy driving
• Inhibited vision from rain or sun glare
• Tailgating
• Road rage
• Racing
• Failing to notice a sudden stop in traffic, particularly on the freeway.
