A cyclist from Cambridge who suffered serious leg injuries when she was involved in a crash in May this year has told how she feels ‘lucky to be alive’.
Heather Lewis, 73, needed emergency treatment to save her lower left leg at Addenbrooke’s Hospital following the incident on May 26, which happened when she was involved in a crash with the back-end of a crane transporter.
The vehicle was being operated by Ainscough Crane Hire and the collision happened when the vehicle made a left turn at the junction of Brooklands Avenue and Hills Road.
Heather has now joined with specialist lawyers to call on anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
She was riding her bicycle along Brooklands Avenue when the crane transporter came out of a side road, stopping at the traffic lights at the junction with Hills Road.
She recalled: “As the vehicle turned onto Hills Road the back-end kicked out and there was no way I could get out of the way.
“I felt lucky to be alive, but my ankle was in a really bad way. I spent a total of five weeks in hospital and have had four reconstruction procedures, but I am still likely to need more support in the next year or so.
“The past few months have been incredibly difficult and I am hopeful that witnesses will be able to assist with our case. Any help would be hugely appreciated.”
Following the incident, Heather instructed specialist serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell’s Cambridge office to help her gain access to vital financial support to aid her rehabilitation and recovery.
Now, as part of their work, the legal experts would be keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident and could provide further information on what happened.
Asiya Yousaf, the lawyer at Irwin Mitchell who is representing Heather, said: “This was a terrible incident which has had a major impact on our client and left her with very serious injuries from which she may never fully recover.
“We are determined to help Heather gain access to vital financial support to assist her recovery - and any information which witnesses could provide regarding the collision could prove vital to our efforts.
