Former Brightwood students are now being offered free legal services from the Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid (TRLA).
Brightwood’s closure stopped students from getting certificates and questions still remain as they are left without a direction for the future.
“I needed maybe two more months to finish and I’m not,” says a former Brightwood student.
After seeing what students were going through, TRLA decided to lend a hand at no cost.
Attorney Priscilla Noriega tells CBS 4 the organization wants to help students who may be lost in terms of what comes next.
“How can they transfer credits? How do they get their transcripts? If they took out loans, is there a way to get those discharged? In all of this we find that if there's any kind of fraud or misleading of the students, then of course we would also look at litigation that would be possible from that,” explains Noriega.
TRLA attorneys will review students cases to determine what options to navigate, whether that be a student receiving their certification or a refund.
According to Noriega, the goal is not to get clients into court but to get students what they need to finish their education.
